How to Clean the Nose Piece of Your Glasses

If you wear glasses, you know how difficult it can be to clean the nose piece. It's hard to get all of the dirt off and on some days, your glasses can start to smell like an old gym locker. But there is a simple way that can keep your nose pad clean.

What is the green dirt on the nose pad?

The green dirt that gets on the nose pieces of glasses is a bacteria known as "coagulase-negative staphylococci." It doesn't pose any serious danger to glasses wearers, but it can cause an unpleasant smell.

Why does this happen?

When you sweat, your skin releases oils and salts. When those oils and salts come into contact with the nose piece, they begin to corrode the metal. That's why you will often see green corrosion on the nose pads of older glasses wearers.

How do I clean it?

There is a simple way to get rid of this bacteria and stop it from coming back. First, apply a paste made of water and baking soda. Make sure it is a thick paste. Spread the mixture on the nose pad, then leave it there for 30 minutes. After that, take a wet towel and wipe the paste off your glasses. You should see results instantly, but if you don't, try applying the paste again for another 20 minutes.

After you are finished, all you have to do is keep your glasses wiped down with a microfiber cloth. This will prevent the nose pieces from corroding and smudging.

Some people may think that putting metal in baking soda might produce a chemical reaction, but it doesn't. Baking soda is a base that breaks down dirt and corrosion on metals, but it won't harm the metal.

There you have it! With a little hard work, your glasses can stay clean and smudge-free for a lifetime.
